MEDIA RELEASE – Cairns Doctors accredited

By | Uncategorized

Local practice receives the mark of quality as an accredited practice

Cairns increased its community health credentials today when Cairns Doctors received a national award of accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to quality and safety within its practice.

Cairns Doctors received this important recognition from Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL), the leading not-for-profit provider of general practice accreditation services within Australia.

AGPAL Chair Dr Richard Choong said accreditation shows the practice makes a significant investment and commitment to quality on a day-to-day basis, across all levels of the practice team.

“Achieving accreditation is a major achievement for any practice and a clear demonstration that Cairns Doctors is striving to improve their level of care to both patients and the community,” he said.

“Practices seek accreditation because they want to do their best and view this as another step towards excellence in patient care.”

To achieve accreditation, a practice team works over a 12 month period to implement the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for general practices, (the recognised national standard), which provides a template for quality care and risk management.

The AGPAL accreditation program was developed to provide a range of minimum expectations for patients surrounding safety and care by assessing the practice environment and their processes. Accreditation was developed jointly by AGPAL and primary health organisations and peak bodies, including the Australian Medical Association (AMA).

Areas of focus during an on-site assessment for accreditation include: ensuring vaccines are within their use-by-date and stored at the correct temperatures; that the practice equipment is clean and sterile; practice staff are up-to-date with their training; and the practice has emergency care available.

Achieving accreditation covers:

  • The safe and lawful use of practice equipment;
  • Accessibility and availability of medical care including after-hours and emergency care;
  • Staff training;
  • Information technology and information security;
  • The security and availability of your records and information.

Dr Choong said accreditation is attainable only through cooperation and communication between staff members.

“Everyone at the practice plays a valuable role in working to meet the RACGP Standards. It gives staff a real sense of pride to work in an accredited practice,” added Dr Choong.

Cairns Doctors proudly displays the AGPAL symbol for all their patients to see.

“We want community members, nation-wide to know that their wellbeing is our priority. By choosing to attend an accredited practice, patients know they will get quality and safe care that meets the RACGP Standards.”

The practice, located at 532 Mulgrave Road, Earlville in Barr St Markets, has special interests in Diabetes, Chronic Disease, Women’s Health, Sexual Health, Pregnancy options, Long Acting Reversible Contraception (Mirena & Implanon for example) Skin Cancer Management, Industrial medicals, Drive Medicals, Commercial Immunisations, onsite vaccine clinics.

The staff at Cairns Doctors will be hard at work this weekend as they set up their brand new practice.

Located at the newly-constructed Barr Street Markets, 532 Mulgrave Rd. Earlville, the business’ new premises will open its doors this coming Monday, July 10.

Staff closed the doors on the medical centre’s original location on Thursday and began packing boxes ahead of this weekend’s move.

Business medical manager Adam Maher says the new location will provide further advantages for patients.

“The benefits of the new site include having a pharmacy right next door and undercover parking, which is a great bonus in Cairns,” he says.

“Having a larger site will mean we’ll also be able to add more services that the community needs and expand on what is already on offer. The only thing that changes with the move will the address.”

Adam has been managing medical centres for about seven years and has more than 10 years of health industry experience.

He took over the managing role at Cairns Doctors at the start of the year, following a change of ownership.

As a result, Cairns Doctors director and founder Dr Heather McNamee is now enjoying reduced stress.

“She’s looking forward to focussing solely on her patients without the pressure of running a business. That’s now my responsibility,” Adam says.

He says Dr McNamee has done “an incredible job” in the past.

“Firstly, in establishing the business and opening up the clinic and, secondly, doing a lot for the community in ways that have not been acknowledged enough – looking after real high-need, at-risk patients.”

He says he’s thrilled to work with someone equally as passionate as him, along with the other amazing doctors and staff too.

“The team from Cairns Doctors are all moving forward together, Dr Kay Haig, Dr Nisha Manoheran, Dr Matthew Warburton and Mrs Karen Warburton will be joining Dr McNamee at the new site, supported by the nursing team Marg and Nikki.

“We would love to work with more doctors who are interested in the style of practice we’re running, Heather’s patient centricity really aligns with my ideologies as a business medical manager,” he says.

“It’s all about the patient – we don’t want doctors to be paid well without patients having quality outcomes as well. That’s the mantra and my focus as a businessman.”

First established in 2013, Cairns Doctors is committed to ensuring access to specialised and general care for the Cairns community and surrounds.

Cairns Doctors new location is at Barr Street Markets, 532 Mulgrave Rd, Earlville and will operate Monday to Friday from 8.30am-5.30pm. For more information and appointments call 4041 7099 or visit www.cairns-doctors.com.au.

  • Diabetes

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse educated and authorised to function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended clinical role.
(Australian Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Council)

To become a Nurse Practitioner in Australia, you must first hold a Bachelor of Nursing (or Equivalent), and hold division one registration with AHPRA.  The Nurse Practitioner Candidate then must complete an approved Masters program to qualify for AHPRA registration as a Nurse Practitioner, but to also obtain Medicare Registration.

The term ‘nurse practitioner’ should not be confused with the term ‘practice nurse’. A practice nurse is an enrolled nurse or a registered nurse (including nurse practitioners) who is employed by, or whose services are otherwise retained by, a general practice.  A Nurse Practitioner is able to diagnose, manage and in doing so prescribe or refer (including X-Ray, Pathology) in the same manner that your GP would have.
